Moms, It’s Time To Start Making Time For Self

Friday I decided to have some time to myself (with the company of my cousin). I headed to Chevy’s, ate some chips and salsa, devoured some hot wings, and had a few drinks while talking for hours. It was just the Friday night I needed and one I hadn’t had for quiet some time. It was honestly a night I didn’t know I needed until I walked out the door and a sense of relief came over me. I was finally getting away from the kids and this time I didn’t feel bad about it.

When it comes to being a full-time mother it’s rare that we get time to be to ourselves, especially if you also work full-time. We get into the routine of waking up, packing lunches, getting the kids dressed and off to school. Then comes the full day at work that doesn’t always go as planned and can drain the life out of you before you get back to the kids school for pick up. Once you pick them up now you have to make snacks, do homework, make dinner and go through a whole bedtime routine. How does the world expect us mother’s not to be physically/mentally drained?

Due to the judgement of others, a lot of mother’s don’t express the amount of exhaustion they feel or how they need or want a break from being a mom for just a day—hell, even a few hours. We get told not to complain because, “it’s your job,” and “that’s what you’re supposed to do.” As a mother we already know it’s our jobs to make sure our children are well taken care of, happy and healthy but we also can’t put our self-care to the side because eventually we will break and mom’s, you do not want that to happen.

It’s time to start making time for yourselves moms and below is a list of how you can do it!

TAKE YOURSELF TO A MOVIE

I’m sure there may be a list of movies you’ve been dying to see but haven’t quite had the time. Plan a day away from the kids and go see one of them. This will give you at least 2 hours away from the clutter and screaming children.

GO OUT TO EAT

Plan a lunch/dinner date with a few girlfriends or family you haven’t seen in awhile. Treat yourself to a drink while at it. You deserve it!

EXERCISE

Go for a nice walk, a hike, do some yoga or take a boxing class. Some fresh air and a nice sweat is just the break you may need. This will give you time to clear your mind, relieve stress and get healthy during the process.

TAKE TIME TO RELAX

After a long day of mommy duties run a warm bath & maybe even light a candle. You’ll be sure to get a good night’s sleep.

POWER NAP

It’ll be the best nap you’ve every had and is sure to keep you going throughout the day. Sometimes we think we need those long hour naps to re-energize but some times those are the same naps that keep us feeling sluggish throughout the day,

Level Up – Read a Book!

It’s sad to say this but since the passing of Nipsey Hussle, I’ve been inspired with wanting to level up and educate myself more on entrepreneurship, financial stability, my history and who I am as a black woman in America. A lot of that involves feeding my brain with the information out there that is provided to us. There are well over 100 million books in the world just waiting for one of us to pick it up, providing us with the information that no teacher ever has. It’s really up to us to take that power, upgrade ourselves and anyone else willing to learn.

Most of the books I’ve read throughout life have been fictional and more on the ghetto or supernatural side but I’ve decided to expand my views a bit more when it comes to reading. Yesterday I asked a few people some of their suggestions and I’ve definitely wrote them down since I can’t order a million books at one. I started with ordering the following:

  • Well-Read Black Girl by Glory Edim
    • Remember that moment when you first encountered a character who seemed to be written just for you? That feeling of belonging remains with readers the rest of their lives—but not everyone regularly sees themselves in the pages of a book. In this timely anthology, Glory Edim brings together original essays by some of our best black women writers to shine a light on how important it is that we all—regardless of gender, race, religion, or ability—have the opportunity to find ourselves in literature
  • The Source of Self-Regard by Toni Morrison
    • The Source of Self-Regard is brimming with all the elegance of mind and style, the literary prowess and moral compass that are Toni Morrison’s inimitable hallmark.   • Year of Yes by Shondra Rhimes
    • This poignant, intimate, and hilarious memoir explores Shonda’s life before her Year of Yes—from her nerdy, book-loving childhood creating imaginary friends to her devotion to creating television characters who reflected the world she saw around her (like Cristina Yang, whose ultimate goal wasn’t marriage, and Cyrus Beene, who is a Republican and gay). And it chronicles her life after her Year of Yes had begun—when Shonda forced herself out of the house and onto the stage, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and giving the Dartmouth Commencement speech; when she learned to say yes to her health, yes to play and she stepped out of the shadows and into the sun; when she learned to explore, empower, applaud, and love her truest self. Yes.

These books are currently on the way thanks to Amazon Prime but what I’m extremely happy about is the post I was tagged in this more, Nipsey’s Book List. It came at just the right time and I can’t wait to add those books to my collection. This man was so damn intelligent, giving, spiritual and had a heart of pure gold. I can’t wait to get into his head a little bit more by reading a few of the books he enjoyed and shared with his family and friends. 24 Hour Juice Cleanse: My Experience.

Hello Everyone and welcome back to The Diary of She. Today I’ll be letting you know how my 24-hour juice cleanse went. I’ve been wanting to do one forever and now, the day has come. I signed up for the Pressed Juicery membership, which is $10 a month. You don’t have to order all the time but the money will remain in your wallet for future purchases. I didn’t pick the beginners cleanse because I have faith in myself to make it through the day. Instead a decided to do Cleanse 2, which is the most popular cleanse, but I am said to say that instead of receiving the two citrus juices I ended up with one citrus and two root juices.
